Comfort in the shifting skies...
Cerulean skies,
Leaves glow like burning embers.
The autumn wind blows.
As I left the office yesterday (a pretty rare event at the moment, for obvious reasons) I glanced up at one of the trees outside of the entrance and took a few moments to really embrace the beauty of autumn. Reds, oranges and golds adorning the remainder of the green on a backdrop of clear, blue skies. It’s a bit of a contrast to what we have today. As I peak behind the veil and look outside, all I see is grey. Grey, rain, a world away from the warmth of yesterday, the only hint of golden ember leaves from leaf fall scattered below.
The last thing I want to be doing today is going outside but there is still something so very soothing and calming about a day like today. Whilst I take a break from tapping away at the keyboard in front of me I hear the rain tapping away at the roof below; the sound of the drops and sporadic bird song breaking the silence. It’s peaceful. It may not be “let’s go out and go on an adventure” weather, but it is certainly cathartic. It’s “let’s stay inside, light some candles, eat comforting food and maybe build a fort” (the inner child is screaming with excitement at this prospect). It’s enjoying the moment, it’s relaxing, it’s hygge.
As part of my mission to create more positive habits and improve my own personal well being, I think I’m going to start by picking up The Little Book of Hygge. I bought this book years ago, read a little bit and then it joined the endless list of books on the shelf gathering dust. It was nothing against the book per se, it was just that my mind couldn’t engage with the words on the paper and I had to distract myself by other means. Coming from someone who always used to have her nose stuck in a book (must resist singing the rest of “Little Town” from Beauty and the Beast) as a child it was a bit disheartening and I’d really like to try and rekindle my love affair with books.
We’ll see what happens. As I said last time, it takes a bit of time to build a habit so I’ll start small by reading a little bit each night and see where it takes me…
